Protecting the Surface: Our Club Policy on Tyre Additives

In the world of indoor RC racing, our most valuable asset isn’t the timing system or the track markers – it’s the carpet. To ensure we have a high-grip, consistent racing surface for years to come, we have a strict policy on which tyre additives are permitted at the club.

The “Approved” List

To keep things simple and safe for our facility, we only permit the following three additives:

  • Spider Grip Blue
  • Spider Grip Green
  • SXT 3.0
Important: If you are using an additive not on this list – specifically certain versions of MR33 or “home-brew” wintergreen mixes – please keep them in your bag. If you aren’t sure what’s in your bottle, ask a committee member to check it before you apply it to your tyres.

Why the Restriction? (It’s Chemistry, Not Commerce)

We often get asked if this is a commercial decision to favor certain brands. It is not. This policy is entirely about protecting the physical integrity of the racing surface. Here is why “illegal” additives are a threat:

1. Fiber Degradation

Many prohibited additives contain heavy oils or petroleum-based solvents. These chemicals act as a slow-motion solvent on the synthetic fibers of the racing carpet. Over time, these oils break down the “weave,” causing the carpet to fray, bobble, and eventually bald. Once the fibers are compromised, the only fix is a full (and very expensive) replacement.

2. The “Slicking” Effect

Oil-based additives don’t just stay on your tyres; they transfer to the track. When an unapproved oil gets into the carpet, it creates “slick” spots. Unlike approved additives that evaporate or stay “tacky,” oils create a permanent lubricated layer. This leads to a massive loss of “bite” for everyone else, making the car’s handling unpredictable and ruining the racing line.

3. The Financial Reality

A high-quality racing carpet represents a multi-thousand pound investment for the club. It is the result of years of member fees and fundraising. If the carpet is ruined by the wrong chemicals, the club’s future is at risk. By sticking to the approved list, you are directly contributing to the sustainability of our track.

Tips for Proper Application

  • Clean First: Use a dedicated tyre cleaner or simple brake cleaner to remove old rubber and debris before applying additive.
  • Less is More: You don’t need to soak the tyre. A light, even coat is more effective and less likely to “fling” onto the track.
  • Dry Time: Allow the additive to sit for 10–15 minutes, then wipe the tyres dry with a clean paper towel before heading to the assembly area.
